Tiny Tina's Wonderlands - Deep Dive

OVERVIEW

Studio

Gearbox Software (Frisco, Texas)

Founded in 1999, Gearbox Software is an American developer best known for creating high-octane first-person shooters and action-oriented role-playing games. The studio achieved massive global success with its flagship looter-shooter franchise, Borderlands. Beyond their primary hits, they have expanded their portfolio by developing and managing series such as Homeworld and Risk of Rain.

My Role

Sound Designer

I worked as a sound designer on Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, delivering polished, in-engine sound design across gameplay and narrative scripted content. I focused on weapons, character-driven Foley, and key gameplay moments—including the Banshee boss fight—ensuring strong sync, clarity, and tonal cohesion with the game’s stylized fantasy aesthetic. I also supported implementation and mix through Wwise, collaborating closely with design and animation to maintain responsiveness and readability, while contributing to a cohesive overall player experience.

The Project

"Released on March 25, 2022, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is a fantasy-themed "looter shooter" spin-off of the Borderlands series where players navigate a chaotic tabletop RPG campaign run by Tiny Tina. As the "Fatemaker," you quest across a whimsical world to defeat the tyrannical Dragon Lord using a combination of traditional firearms, customizable melee weapons, and powerful magic spells. The game introduces a deep multiclass system and a board-game-style Overworld, allowing for extensive character customization and exploration in both solo and cooperative play."

Engine / Middleware: Unreal Engine  • Audiokinetic Wwise
Production Context: Onboarded Mid-Production, Transitioned to Borderlands 4 End of Principal Production
Team Structure: Audio Director, Audio Co-Director, Audio Lead, Producers, Sound Designers, Technical Sound Designers, Audio Code, VO, Composer,  Outsourcing

I joined the project during mid-production, contributing across multiple content verticals while working within an established AAA audio pipeline.

My role emphasized high-quality asset delivery, predictable sprint execution, strong documentation, and close collaboration with technical audio, laying the groundwork for more system-level and leadership responsibilities later in my career.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge: The Banshee boss lacked clear narrative or aesthetic direction from art or narrative.

Action: Researched historical and folkloric interpretations of the Banshee, creating an audio-driven identity and documenting the creative rationale for leadership and the broader team.

Result: Delivered a cohesive, grounded boss presentation that aligned sound design, narrative tone, and gameplay presence — supported by clear documentation for future reference.

Challenge: Some bespoke narrative moments felt overly non-diegetic and disconnected from the world.

Action: Used impulse responses and targeted mastering techniques to embed these moments more naturally into the environment.

Result: Improved immersion and cohesion without increasing iteration cycles.

Growth & Career Progression

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands marked a clear step toward system-level thinking and leadership readiness:

  • Developed deeper understanding of:
    • Voice limiting
    • Memory usage
    • Folder structure and shared syntax
  • Gained hands-on experience collaborating with Technical Sound Design
  • Strengthened documentation, planning, and prioritization skills
  • Became more proactive in cross-discipline communication and ownership

These experiences directly informed my transition into more senior collaboration with Borderlands 4 and leadership-focused roles at Survios.
